Is it greedy to make a personal injury claim?

Personal injury claims have such a bad reputation in the press that many people sometimes feel greedy when they consider whether to make a claim for injuries they have sustained as a result of an accident that wasn't their fault. Is there any reason for people making a claim to feel greedy, or is compensation something that people are entitled to?

One of the reasons why personal injury claims are so vilified is because they have been blamed for rising insurance premiums. Premiums have been rising for everyone, we are told, because of the high number of people making claims. However, with the increase in premium costs for consumers has also come increased profits for insurance companies, suggesting that rather than trying to balance their books, insurance companies are using personal injury claims as an excuse to raise prices.

Other people might consider making a personal injury claim greedy when there is a workplace accident because it sets the claimant up against their employer. Some people fear their colleagues might think making a claim is a selfish act that sets them apart from the group, even when their injuries are serious.

The fact is that lots of people just don't have the luxury of deciding not to make a personal injury claim. If your injury puts you out of work and you end up having to pay for things that are a direct consequence of your injury you might struggle to make ends meet.

Of course, there are people who will have suffered an accident in the workplace or on the road and think that they will be able to get rich quick. The greedy ones will be disappointed however, as making a personal injury claim is about making sure someone is appropriately compensated for the costs incurred by an accident, not about funding your round the world holiday.
